Helping Children with Cancer and Other Chronic Blood Diseases

Sabriya’s Castle of Fun Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit that improves the quality of life for children with cancer, sickle cell disease and other blood disorders and their families in the Los Angeles area.  For the last 22 years, Sabriya’s Castle of Fun has partnered with hospitals and other community based organizations to bring hope, joy and strength to 3,000 seriously ill children and their families each year.

At any given time, roughly 10%, or 200,000 children in Los Angeles struggle with cancer, sickle cell disease and other blood diseases. These children and their families face myriad challenges including loss of normal life, isolation, depression, hopelessness, grief, low self-efficacy and self-esteem, guilt, fear of death, anger, lack of understanding about disease and treatment, and financial difficulties due to mounting medical bills. Their daily life as they know it ceases to exist and they find themselves on the fringes of society and brink of financial ruin.

Sabriya’s Castle of Fun provides respite for children and families and restores some of the fun and joyful activities that they may have engaged in prior to their illness. These activities are designed to be fun for families, and also restore a sense of normal life, hope and strength that children and families need to battle their illness. Programs are designed to give families happy memories that they can treasure in the event their child does not survive, and distract children and their parents from the isolation and sadness of long hospital stays.
